Eco Shabbat November 2025

“Till and tend” was the theme of our Eco Shabbat service in Stroud attended by members of the community from across the Three Counties.

During the service Rabbi Anna explained the virtues of “till and tend”: that while we take from the Earth, we must also care for it and treasure it for subsequent generations.

We asked those present to consider what had been most meaningful to them in the service, with regard to this theme. After discussion in small groups, community members wrote down their thoughts on cut-out paper ’hands’, which were then put up on display. 3CLJC Cheder children had also written down their ideas on hands to add to the display.

It was a day when the community re-affirmed its commitment to Eco Judaism, made clear by all those who attended.

Rabbi Anna, said: “It was so nice to see so many people turn up to express what they feel about the environment and to celebrate the initiative, which is very popular among the community. It was a joyous occasion full of celebration, care and concern for the world in which live.”

Mark, Chair of 3CLJC said: “We look forward to this service every year and it was fantastic that so many people took the time to attend.

The service also included the admission to Judaism of Martin, following his interview with the Bet Din. This was a moving ceremony and very appropriate to the occasion, since Martin is such a valued member of the Eco-Judaism team. He has already shown he will be a great asset to the community, by leading the Culture Club. See Journey to Judaism later in this newsletter, for his full story.
