On 14th June, the Three Counties Liberal Jewish Community held its annual Anne Frank Memorial Service in Hereford. This year’s theme, “Hope in Difficult Times,” was movingly explored by Rabbi Anna Gerrard, who spoke about the enduring power of hope in the face of global conflict, famine, and suffering.
Drawing from Jewish tradition, Rabbi Anna reflected on the Israelites in the desert, who kvetched even as they received manna each day. She referenced the Dayenu prayer “It would have been enough”, as a reminder of the importance of gratitude and perspective, even when times are hard.
18 members of Monmouth Preparatory School choir gave a beautiful musical performance, featuring “Hava NaShira,” Jacob Collier’s “Little Blue,” and “The Song Makers.” Choir leader Joe Walton (son of Chair Mark Walton) also played the cello, accompanied on piano by Derek Harris, adding a rich, emotional resonance to the occasion.
The service included thoughtful readings about Anne Frank by Grace Towle and Jade Clift, further deepening the reflection on resilience and remembrance.
The High Sheriff of Herefordshire, Helen Bowden, honoured the community with her presence and praised the sermon’s message of faith and understanding. Attendees included members of the Herefordshire Inter-Faith Group, parents, and members from across the region: Monmouth, Ross, Malvern, Hereford, Stroud, Cheltenham, and Gloucester, making it a truly communal and memorable gathering.
